Dapoxetine

December 20th, 2011 by admin

There is a medication that has been in the research and development phase for years to help out men coping with premature health issues. I do believe we know what we are talking about when this is mentioned and for convenience we will refer to it as PE. Studies show that PE effects upto 1/3 of men at sometime in their life. The name of this medication showing help in this area is Dapoxetine, or commonly referred to by its trademark name of Priligy®. As is the case with a handful of other medications, Dapoxetine was originally being studied to be used as an antidepressant. This is because it is a SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) and these are associated with their positive attributes they have towards depression.

However, what researcher and developers found was that Dapoxetine would have to be taken numerous times each day to be effective. This was considered to be unrealistic to expect someone to take it many times throughout the day. Generally if someone has to take something more than once or twice a day, it can become bothersome and very easy to forget a dose. So the plan to study this as a depression treatment was scrapped. However, some SSRI’s have been known to have some effect on PE and because Dapoxetine was quickly eliminated from the body, (often associated with fewer side effects) it was considered a worth while product to study in its relation to PE.

It was back in the early to mid 2000’s that dapoxetine started being studied for this issue and clinical testing showed great promise in this endeavor. Several testing phases with men suffering from this condition enrolled in the study and on average started lasting much longer than previously. It was reported that many men where lasting upwards of three times their normal time. Side effects reported where in general mild consisting for some of any of the combination or none at all, they included headache, nausea, dizziness or diarrhea. But overall the developers felt the benefits outweighed the negatives and proposed it to the FDA for approval back in December of 2004. Much to their dismay, the FDA reported back to them of October 2005 with a disapproved letter. This however did not stop them from further pursuing this product in other countries.

A few years later after more research into showing it was both effective and safe both Sweden and Finland approved this drug for PE. It was then a short time after this that it opened the doors for approval in other countries including Germany, Finland, Austria, Italy, Portugal and Spain. It also later became approved in countries like Korea and New Zealand to mention a few. The manufacturers of dapoxetine still have plans of having it approved in the US but for now it is not available.

There are some other issues with dapoxetine that should be mentioned for its overall safety. Generally speaking in most countries dapoxetine requires a prescription in order to obtain it. In some countries Dapoxetine / Priligy® maybe available over the counter. There is also a warning no to drink alcohol while taking this medication, there could be some serious reactions with it. One should also not be already taking a medication that interacts with serotonin in the brain. These could be other anti-depressants or perhaps migraine headache medicine. Dapoxetine has also been tested and approved for men between the ages of 18 and 64. Do not take this if you do not fit into these ages unless a doctor has given it the ok. It is recommended you talk with your doctor or healthcare provider for more information on this or other issues not mentioned here.
